TO: Campus Community
FR: Gerald L. Jones, Vice President for Student Affairs
To the Seawolf Community:
We are aware that an organization called Project Truth is currently on campus. We also understand that their presence, including verbal and visual content, may be unsettling and upsetting to students, staff, faculty, and others visiting our campus today.
Protected by Free Speech and the U.S. and California Constitutions, this group, like others, has the right to come to campus and display signs, hand out flyers, and peaceably encourage discourse with our campus community members.
If you choose to participate in civil discourse with the people representing the viewpoint of their organization, please be sure to do so with the values of the Seawolf Commitment in mind, acting with integrity, respect, responsibility, and excellence. Remember our Student Code of Conduct and expectations around behavior that may cause harm or may be illegal.
Please note that acting and reacting can include the following methods:
- Choosing to avoid or walk past the group/display
- Not saying anything, as silence can be a statement, too
- Participating in civil conversation with the people at the display
- Taking an active approach to communicate your viewpoint (e.g., tabling, posters, flyers, etc.). We encourage all to register plans to ensure appropriate resources are made available to you.
We’d also like to remind you about resources available to students through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the Student Health Center (SHC). Faculty and staff can access resources through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
