TO: Campus Community
FR: Emily F. Cutrer, Interim President
Dear Seawolf Community,
As we approach the inauguration of a new presidential administration this January, we recognize this transition may increase concerns and uncertainties, particularly for our undocumented and mixed-status students, faculty, staff, and their families. At Sonoma State University, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to maintaining a supportive, inclusive, and safe environment for all members of our community. We understand the unique challenges faced by our undocumented and mixed-status Seawolves and their families. To ensure you have the resources and support you need, we want to highlight some important updates and opportunities.
Travel Recommendations
For those planning to travel outside the U.S. during the winter break, we encourage considering a return before January 20, 2025—the date of the presidential inauguration. While not a requirement or mandate from Sonoma State, this precautionary recommendation aims to minimize potential disruptions, including those that could arise from policy changes made by the new administration as soon as its first day, January 20, 2025.
Upcoming Workshops and Resources
Although the campus will be closed during the holiday break, our dedication to supporting you remains steadfast. Free legal support is available for students, faculty, staff, and their immediate families through our partnership with CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights).
On Friday, January 10, 2025, the Sonoma State DREAM Center, in collaboration with CHIRLA, will host a Know Your Rights workshop, FREE and open to the entire campus community. This training will provide participants with essential knowledge and strategies for navigating encounters with immigration enforcement. Additional details, including the time, will be shared early in the spring semester.
On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at noon, we encourage you to attend a FREE webinar, Your Rights, Your Future. Presented by experienced attorneys from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, this session will offer practical guidance on navigating legal challenges and understanding your options. A live Q&A will follow the presentation, and registration is encouraged to receive access to the recording.
