December 7, 2023
As we enter the final days of 2023 and prepare for the holiday festivities shortly ahead, I want to express my sincerest thanks to all of you for making Sonoma State such a success during the past year. We certainly have had challenges, and the path forward will not be without more obstacles, but we have abundant reasons for optimism going into the new year.
SSU continues to be a bright beacon of what is possible for students who come to us from a variety of sociocultural backgrounds and life experiences. We remain a college of choice for first-generation students and remain first in the CSU for transfer graduation rate. These are not small accomplishments. They are hallmarks of our enviable reputation for academic excellence, diversity, accommodation, and campus culture.
Next, our university also is a bragging point for the communities it serves. Everywhere I go, people are proud that Sonoma State University is in their backyard, and that our students, faculty, and staff are so engaged in the life of the cities, towns, schools, businesses, and community organizations that surround us.
Finally, the quality and commitment of faculty and staff that serve here is without equal. As I greeted many of you at this year’s Winter Celebration, I once again was reminded of the humanistic heart at the center of this institution. The people here care – about students, about their work, and about one another.
That caring is highlighted in this edition of Noma News, which includes items about the Winter Celebration; faculty and staff milestones; the 40th anniversary of our standout Holocaust & Genocide Lecture series; a donation drive for Lobo’s Pantry; accomplishments by our schools and athletes; and guidance about the upcoming holiday break, among other topics. I know you will peruse each with interest.
I hope each and every one of you celebrates the season in your own special way, is able to spend meaningful time with family and friends, and can rest and recharge for the important work yet to do at our university. I can think of no finer group to be part of on the journey ahead.
Thank you for a successful 2023, and here’s to a bright 2024!
Warmly,
Mike Lee, Ph.D.
President
