Update from the President March 11, 2020

March 11, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

Given the need to be proactive in our planning around COVID-19, Sonoma State University is suspending face-to-face classes for three days to allow faculty time to prepare to teach remotely, should the need arise.

SSU will not hold face-to-face classes on Thursday, March 12, Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 23, 2020. We have made this decision in consultation with academic leaders including the deans, Academic Senate leadership, local California Faculty Association leaders, Associated Students leaders, our Incident Response Team, Cabinet and CSU Chancellor Timothy White.

This period of suspension will give faculty time to take advantage of the many resources we have provided through our Faculty Center to prepare to shift their classes to a remote, virtual, or alternative assignment modality in case this is needed.

At this point, we plan to resume all face-to-face classes on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

To be clear, we do not perceive a threat to the university community at this time. We do, however, perceive a need to be proactive as this situation is rapidly unfolding. Please know that currently there are still only three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sonoma County and none that was community transmitted. We remain focused on keeping our campus community healthy and safe.

During this period of face-to-face class suspension, the campus will remain open, as will the residence halls and dining services. All campus operations will remain open and staff and student employees should continue to report to work. However, staff who have an underlying health concern should contact Renee Senander (Renee.Senander@sonoma.edu) in Human Resources.

Please continue to check your SSU email and our COVID-19 website to ensure you have the most up-to-date information.

With gratitude,
