The German minor program enriches students’ academic and career opportunities by providing them with skills that complement many majors at SSU. German helps students understand themselves as participants in their own culture. It also helps them understand U.S. history and culture, since German-Americans represent the largest single heritage population. Moreover, German is the most widely spoken language in Europe. Knowing German also opens up opportunities to connect with more than 120 million native speakers worldwide. Additionally, the study of German prepares students to be competitive for graduate school, since many graduate programs require or recommend German. German minors may also have a distinct advantage entering a professional career, in fields such as international business, economics, science, history, global studies, music, or teaching. The SSU German program offers a variety of courses that provide students with linguistic skills and cultural knowledge of the German-speaking world. Students are encouraged to participate in the CSU International Programs and take courses in Germany, which may be counted toward the minor. Students wishing to study abroad are strongly encouraged to consult with their German advisor to ensure that courses taken abroad can be applied to the German minor. A minimum of 8 of the 21 required units must be taken at SSU.

The study of history involves the study of all human thought and action, ranging from the economic and the political to the psychological and the artistic. Combining the perspectives and methods of the social sciences and the humanities, it seeks to comprehend the problems and challenges faced by individuals and societies in the distant and recent past, nearby and far away. This understanding of the human experience provides the necessary historical perspective to explain the present.
The history major is designed both to provide the basis for a solid liberal arts education and to meet the needs of individual students.  Within the specific requirements of the major, students receive basic instruction in the history of the United States as well as that of other countries. They are also introduced to the methods of historical inquiry, techniques of historical writing, differing philosophies of history and historiography, past and present. Beyond these basic requirements, students may arrange course work to fit their needs and interests. Upper division classes are generally small and offer ample individual attention, guidance, and interaction between students and faculty.

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently; on time and in budget. It is a strategic competency that enables organizations to strengthen their weaknesses, exploit opportunities, and guard against threats. Project Management has always been practiced informally, but it began to emerge as a distinct profession in the mid-20th century. Today, project management is one of the top skills demanded by successful organizations around the world.

Sonoma State University offers two project management courses: traditional and agile. Although traditional project management usually involves the creation of a physical product such as a building, and agile project management often involves the creation of an intellectual product, such as a software program, either approach may be deemed the most appropriate for the situation. Traditional techniques have been used for years to manage large software projects; and some organizations in rapidly evolving markets are successfully employing agile techniques to develop physical products and/or prototypes.

In addition to a certificate from Sonoma State University, both courses will prepare you to take the appropriate certification examinations offered by the Project Management Institute®.

Sociological research attempts to improve the human condition within the context of a strong tradition of social justice and human equality. Society shapes attitudes, goals, hopes and aspirations, and personal preferences. Society affects individuals, groups, and entire nations. Yet at the same time that society is shaping the individual, the individual is shaping society. In order to understand oneself and others, the world, and the future, one has to understand society. Sociology is the discipline that studies groups and societies—what they are, how they got that way, and what impact they have.

Students in the online Certificate in Wine Business Management complete a total of 4 courses: Foundation (4 weeks), Intermediate (8 weeks), and two of three offered Advanced courses (8 weeks each). Professionals interested in pursuing the accredited Sonoma MBA in Wine Business or the Sonoma Executive MBA in Wine Business can waive the two-year industry experience admission requirement with successful completion of the Foundation and Intermediate course levels.

The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Department welcomes all students who would like to learn about gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, immigration, class, and ability. Students in WGS study how gender structures everything from our innermost sense of self, to family and community, to transnational relations. Students in this major sharpen their critical thinking skills about some of the most dynamic issues in our society. These are the types of skills and knowledge that employers and social movements want and need—they also help us deepen our understanding of ourselves.
