Dear Colleagues,

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and hope you had a wonderful holiday break.

As you are likely aware, the CSU begins the new year facing strong headwinds and grappling with the significant challenges and ramifications of Governor Newsom’s state budget proposal. I am writing to inform you that because of these and the many other serious issues that the system and its campuses are confronting simultaneously, I have decided to postpone the presidential search at Sonoma State University.

Additionally, Interim President Emily Cutrer continues to take significant and meaningful steps to address the fiscal and enrollment challenges at the university. These steps take time to implement and, therefore, reinforce my decision that it is not the right time to begin a presidential search.

Please be assured that the CSU will diligently, consistently, and forcefully advocate against the governor’s proposed budget cut and for restoration of ongoing compact funding. That being said, we must also prepare for the significant impacts outlined in last week’s budget proposal.

I know we all want the very best for Sonoma State and I am sure that each of you will work collaboratively with Interim President Cutrer as the necessary steps are taken to strengthen the university and bring about its brightest future.

Warmly,

Mildred García, Ed.D.

Chancellor
