TO: Sonoma State University Community
FR: Nader Oweis, Chief of Police
The Sonoma State Police Department recently learned of a group of individuals who have been linked in a series of burglaries on university campuses in Nevada and California, whereby they accessed various university administration buildings and offices. These individuals have targeted university and personal property such as computers, wallets, purses, credit cards, and backpacks.
As we begin the holiday season and the campus community disperses, it is important to remember to take a few easy actions to prevent and reduce the risk of theft.
- Do not let your guard down. Immediately and promptly report any suspected crime, suspicious persons, or activities on campus to University Police by calling 911 or the non-emergency line at 707-664-4444, or by using one of the many Blue Light Phones on campus.
- Be alert to your surroundings. Your actions as an active bystander can help prevent crimes from occurring within our campus community.
- If you believe that you or someone else is in an unsafe situation, please do not delay calling 911 or seeking assistance from others (if applicable).
- Never leave items unattended, and make sure all of your belongings are locked up, even if you are away from your desk or office for just a few minutes. Valuables should be taken with you prior to leaving for the break.
- Secure doors and windows. Close blinds and curtains so others cannot peer in while you are away from your office or residence hall, especially if you are on the first floor.
- Bicycles should be taken home or inside, and locked. If you haven’t already done so, please register your bicycle with the Sonoma State University Police Department.
- Share these reminders so your friends and coworkers are aware and prepared for the break.
We wish you all a safe, productive, and enjoyable end of the semester and holiday season.
