In the English Major, you will learn how to use language, words, symbols, and ideas to change the world. You will learn about how people have used stories to change their worlds in the past, and about how the art of writing might transform itself in the future. You will look at literature from many angles: as a creator, as a scholarly researcher, and as a teacher and communicator. You will explore books from the distant past and from right now. You will learn about many different histories, cultures, and worldviews. You will encounter classics and also new and experimental works. You will build skills of communication, analysis, research, teamwork, and creative thinking beneficial for a wide variety of careers and professions. Most importantly, you’ll get the chance to encounter truly meaningful and life-changing ideas.
