CSU Executive Order 665 stipulates a Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) at the baccalaureate and graduate levels. At SSU, students must meet the GWAR requirement by passing the Written English Proficiency Test (WEPT Exam) (with few exceptions) in order to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. Students may take the exam multiple times until they pass. It is recommended that students take the WEPT in their junior year to allow for time for additional practice and preparation in the event that they fail the test. Graduate students may fulfill the GWAR requirement either by passing the WEPT, showing evidence of having taken and passed an equivalent exam at another CSU, or by meeting specific requirements outlined by individual Master’s Programs at SSU (consult with departments for further information). Students and faculty should consult the WEPT handbook for current information on WEPT waiver options.
