Faculty/Staff Night at Two Ocean-Themed Operas
SSU Departments of Music and Theatre Arts & Dance continues its “Water Works” performance season with “Island Passions: Two One-Act Operas” running Feb. 7-17. Faculty staff are admitted free at the Feb. 14 performance.
The first opera entitled “The Deserted Island (L' Isola Disabitata)," by Joseph Haydn features sublime music and arias as it follows the romantic, yet comic adventures of two sisters abandoned on a Caribbean island. When the two young women become stranded on a strange island, both harbor conflicting desires and waver from staying away from the injurious world of traitorous men and embracing the possibility of desire and love.
The second opera, “Riders to the Sea,” features passionate, atmospheric music by Ralph Vaughan Williams evoking a windswept ocean as it tells the tale of two sisters and their mother trying to save the last of six sons from his fate on the sea. Both performances feature impressive music while adhering to the “Water Works” theme.
Tickets are sold at the door one hour prior to curtain. Pre-order or reserve tickets can be purchased through the SSU box office at 707-664-2353 or online at www.sonoma.edu/tix.
