This course is an exploration of the interrelationship between the human and the physical environment. It examines the ways in which the environment has been imagined, exploited and conserved, and has been organized around the themes of California as a land of many bioregions, as a ecologically unique island, and as a place of enormous opportunity, ripe for economic exploitation. The course provides both an historical overview and a literary journey that examines the regionalism of California in its many manifestations as related to the ethnic and cultural groups that have helped shape its destiny.

Field trips will be taken to various sites that illustrate bioregions and issues covered in the class.

Course fulfills the core requirement for California Cultural Studies.
