COMBATING HATE CRIMES AT SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

RESOLVED: That the Sonoma State University Academic Senate joins its voice with those of the Associated Students, the California Faculty Association, President Ruben Armiñana, and student leaders Derek Pierre and Jonathan White, in unequivocally condemning the racially-based defacing of ASI’s campaign signs.

RESOLVED: That the Sonoma State University Academic Senate affirms that our campus community will not condone such repugnant behavior on our campus and joins the Associated Students in urging “every member of the campus community to speak out loudly and clearly against expressions of racist, sexist, homophobic and other bias, and react promptly to acts of discriminatory harassment.”

RESOLVED: That that Academic Senate expresses its admiration for and support of the responsiveness and leadership shown by the ASI Election candidates, Derek Pierre and Jonathan White, and by student groups and leaders, who worked together to organize campus rallies and facilitated discussions in response to these hateful acts.

Rationale: During the ASI Elections of Spring 2008, campaign posters of candidates were defaced in discriminatory and racist acts of vandalism. Such acts of hate cannot and will not be tolerated on our campus.
