Welcome to the School of Science and Technology!

It is with great pride and pleasure that I welcome you to the School of Science and Technology (SST). Since the school's founding in the 1960's, SST has encouraged scientific and educational excellence. Nine academic departments - Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Science, Geology, Kinesiology, Mathematics & Statistics, Nursing, and Physics & Astronomy - together with other outstanding programs including the NASA Education and Public Outreach group form the foundation of our school. With about 1700 majors supported by about 150 faculty and staff, our school provides high-quality academic programs, superior laboratory and research facilities accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, and challenging yet supportive environments for student achievement.

As described in our school's mission statement, "the School of Science and Technology is dedicated to the creation and application of knowledge in our disciplines and to communicate scientific understanding to students, peers, and the communities we serve." In service to our mission, SST values faculty-student interaction much of which is cultivated in small majors courses and a rich hands-on curriculum. We support a spectrum of experiences for our students ranging from traditional chemistry and biology laboratories to field studies in our Galbreath and Fairfield Osborn preserves and other locations including Geology's overnight trips to geologically significant areas. Our Nursing program offers traditional and distance programs that include important clinical assignments at regional healthcare sites. Kinesiology students study human movement in the biomechanics lab and astronomy comes alive at the SSU campus observatory. With more than 200 machines, our computing laboratories are well equipped for computer programming and mathematics and statistics computation. Our Engineering Science complex houses equipment for the investigation of electronics, communications, networking and many other technology areas. The School of Science and Technology's Points of Pride webpage provides additional highlights of our school.

Each year our school's exceptional graduates go on to contribute to their disciplines, meet the workforce needs of our state in science, technology, healthcare, education, engineering, and many other high-demand fields, and continue the legacy of excellence established by our many outstanding alumni.

I encourage you to look over our website and to visit us in person to learn more about the many programs and projects that our faculty, staff and students are a part of this year. You may also wish to visit the individual departments' webpages linked to our school page to learn more about the innovative fields of study of our SST community. You're sure to be drawn to the student-centered emphasis of our school, the quality academic programs and the innovative learning opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students.

I invite you to join us!
