Scholarship Opportunities

The School of Business and Economics is pleased to announce the following Wine Business and Economics scholarship opportunities for students in our wine business, MBA, and economic programs. Please read each description below to determine your eligibility and to learn how to apply.

Wine Business Institute Scholarships

The La Tosh Wine Business Scholarship

After teaching wine business at Sonoma State University for more than a decade and being inspired by the brilliance and enthusiasm of the students pursuing a wine business degree, Dr. Liz Thach, MW, joined by her husband, Michael Thach, decided to establish the La Tosh Wine Business Scholarship. Designed to honor and support wine business majors, the scholarship is provided on an annual basis to assist students in paying for books and/or partial tuition/fee expenses to pursue a degree and/or attend the annual SSU international wine business trip to an exciting global wine region.

Who: Applicants must be enrolled and pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Wine Business and have already completed at least one wine class at SSU. Must also have wine industry experience and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
What: One individual scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.
How: Turn in completed application to Jessica Pozzi, Wine Business Institute Coordinator, in STEV 2015.

Liz Thach Wine Industry Scholarship

The Liz Thach Wine Industry Scholarship is intended to provide financial support to SSU students majoring in wine business.

Who: Must be a student enrolled and pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Wine Business and have already completed at least one wine class at SSU. Must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. 
What: One $1,500 individual scholarship will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.
How: Turn in completed application to Jessica Pozzi, Wine Business Institute Coordinator, in STEV 2015.

Donn P. Reisen Scholarship Fund

The Donn P. Reisen Scholarship Fund is intended to provide financial support for one or more full-or part-time students who are currently enrolled or accepted as an MBA student with a concentration in wine business strategies. The recipient of the scholarship will demonstrate the qualities that made Donn Reisen an industry leader: passion for the industry and its products, a commitment to wine education, and the warmth and generosity that allowed him to connect with so many over his legendary career.

Who: Must be enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the MBA program with a concentration in Wine Business and a 3.0 GPA in their last 60 units of coursework. Must demonstrate through their application that they embody the spirit and intention of Donn Reisen (see full application).
What: One $5,000 or two individual scholarships of up to $2,500 will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.

Charlie Palmer's Pigs & Pinot Annual Scholarship for Students in Wine Business

Charlie Palmer's Pigs and Pinot Annual Scholarship will provide one scholarship annually for an undergraduate or graduate student concentrating in Wine Business. Charlie Palmer's Pigs & Pinot has graciously donated this scholarship in hopes of making a difference in one local Sonoma County student's life. The recipient of this scholarship will demonstrate the following qualities: a passion for the industry and its products, a commitment to wine education, and high ethical standards within the field of wine. Recipients must show financial need and be a Sonoma County resident. The scholarship will provide a one-time $10,000 award to pay for tuition, books, fees, housing and other expenses to support the student's career advancement and educational accomplishment.

Who: Must be enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the MBA or Bachelor's Degree program with a concentration in Wine Business, and have a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 units of completed coursework.
What: One individual scholarship of up to $10,000 will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.

Southern Wine and Spirits Scholarship

The Southern Wine & Spirits of America Wine Business Scholarship Fund will provide two scholarships for undergraduate or graduate Wine Business Students at the School Business and Economics. The students will maintain a 3.0 or better GPA. The recipients of these scholarships will demonstrate through their application materials a current career (or plan toward a future career) in the wine industry, a strong work ethic, demonstrated human relationship skills and a passion for the wine industry.  The scholarship will provide two $10,000 awards that may pay for tuition, books, fees, housing and other expenses to support the student's career advancement and educational accomplishment.

Who: Must be enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the Undergraduate or MBA program with a concentration in Wine Business and a 3.0 GPA in
their last 60 units of coursework.
What: One individual scholarship will be awarded and split into two payments of $5,000 each.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.

Vintage Wine Estates (Available only for Sonoma Wine MBA students starting in fall 2016)

The Vintage Wine Estates Scholarship is intended to provide financial support for one or more students working in the wine industry, who have been accepted into the Wine MBA program beginning in the fall semester of each year. The applicants for this scholarship will demonstrate through their application materials thoughtful professional goals, insight into the challenges of underrepresented populations in the wine industry and a desire to help others reach their goals as they advance in their career. 

Who: Must be enrolled or accepted in the MBA program with a concentration in Wine Business. Applicant must currently be employed in the wine industry or effectively demonstrate desire to join the wine industry.
What: One individual scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2017 award is Friday, February 10, 2017.

Sonoma Valley Cuisine Scholarship (Not available for 2017/2018)

The Sonoma Valley Cuisine Scholarship will provide one scholarship annually for an undergraduate or graduate student concentrating on Wine Business. The recipient of this scholarship will demonstrate a passion for the wine business industry. The scholarship will provide a one-time $1000 award to pay for enrollment fees and other expenses to support the student's career advancement and educational accomplishment.

Who: Must be enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the MBA program with a concentration in wine business and a 3.0 GPA in their last 60 units of coursework. Must demonstrate through their application that they embody the spirit and intention of Donn Reisen (see full application).
What: One individual scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2016 award is Friday, March 11, 2016.

Women for WineSense Scholarship (Not available for 2017/2018)

As part of their mission, Women for WineSense actively promotes wine education and devotes time each year for fundraising and shares the proceeds with local colleges and universities. The Women for WineSense Scholarship Fund is intended to provide financial support for one full- or part-time student who is currently enrolled or accepted as a student with a concentration in wine business. The recipient of the scholarship must be actively pursuing a Bachelors or Masters level degree in wine business.

Who: Must be a female student enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the MBA or Bachelor's Degree program with a concentration in wine business, and have a 3.0 GPA in their last 60 units of completed coursework.
What: One individual scholarship of up to $2,500 will be awarded.
When: N/A

The Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma Scholarship for Students in Wine Business (Not available for 2017/2018)

The Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma Scholarship will provide one scholarship for a student that is enrolled or enrolling in the Direct to Consumer Certificate. The recipient of this scholarship will demonstrate the following qualities: a passion for hospitality in the wine industry and be currently working, or has a strong desire to work in, this area of wine business. Recipients must show financial need and be a Sonoma or Napa County resident. The scholarship will provide a one-time $1,200 award to pay enrollment fees and other expenses to support the student's career advancement and educational accomplishment.

Who: Enrolled or enrolling in the Direct to Consumer Certificate program offered through the Wine Business Institute.
What: One individual scholarship of $1,200 will be awarded.

Rhone Rangers Scholarship Fund (Not available for 2017/2018)

The Rhone Rangers is America's leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting American Rhone varietal wines. Their mission is to educate the public on Rhone varietal wine grapes grown in America and to promote the production and enjoyment of these wines, with emphasis on integration into our daily lives. The recipient of this scholarship will demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and support of these unique wines. The scholarship will provide a one-time $3,000 award to pay enrollment fees and other expenses to support the applicant's career advancement and educational accomplishment.

Who: Must be a student enrolled or accepted for full or part-time study in the MBA or Execute MBA or Certificate program with a concentration in wine business.
What: A one-time $3,000 award to pay enrollment fees and other expenses to support the applicant's career advancement and educational accomplishment.


Small Winery Harvest Internship Scholarship (Not available for 2017/218)

The Small Winery Harvest Internship Scholarship is intended to provide financial support for one or two, full- or part-time students, currently enrolled as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration student with a concentration in wine business strategies. It is intended for student seeking to complete a full-time fall harvest internship at a small winery (under 10,000 cases). A list of local wineries will be provided to the scholarship recipient by the School of Business and Economics from which the student will source an internship. Full-time harvest positions are typically more than 40 hours/week and require early morning and late night work; it is highly recommended that the scholarship recipient schedule only the internship course during the fall semester.

Who: Applicant must be enrolled in full- or part time study in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree program with a concentration in wine business strategies.
What: A one-time $12,000 award to support one or two students financially during the harvest internship.
When: Application deadline for the fall 2015 award is Friday April 24, 2015.

Economics Scholarships

Ben-Zion Scholarship

The Ben-Zion Scholarship is granted to a student who is an Economics major based on the following criteria: grades in one of the two (or both) theory courses and cumulative GPA in Economics classes, and the student is foreign born. The Scholarship is awarded in the amounted of $3300.

Hayes-Lewis Scholarship

The Hayes-Lewis Scholarship is awarded to a junior standing Economics major with the highest GPA.
