Application to the Psychology Major

Are you a current SSU student?

  • Application requires a SSU cummulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Complete PSY 250 (Introduction to Psychology) or equivalent with a grade of C or better.
  • Recommend completion of MATH 165 (Introduction to Statistics) (GE B4)
  • Complete application.

Applications are available the first month of each semester in the Psychology Department office, Stevenson 3092.
After you complete and submit an application to declare Psychology as your major, your application will be reviewed by a faculty committee and the Department Chair.

Are you an incoming first year student?

  • Application requires a cummulative 3.0 GPA for high school college preparation courses (A-G courses).
  • Indicate on your Sonoma State application form that you would like Psychology as your major.

Are you a transfer student?

  • Application requires a cummulative CSU transferable GPA of 3.0.
  • Complete 60 CSU transferable units (30 units must be General Education (GE) units).
  • Complete GE Area A1 Oral communication (Speech), A3 Critical Thinking and B4 Math completed with a C or better (Introduction to Statistics is the recommended GE math course.)
  • Complete GE Area A2 Written Communication (English Composition) completed with a B or better.
  • Complete PSY 250 (Introduction of Psychology) or equivalent with a C or better.
  • Recommend completion of PSY 280 (Research Methods in Psychology) or equivalent with C or better.
  • Indicate on your Sonoma State application form that you would like Psychology as your major.
