My Bio

Pete Estabrook currently holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Professional Music from Berklee College (Boston, MA), a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Jazz Studies from California Institute for the Arts (Valencia, CA). Currently, he is enrolled in an Alexander Technique Teacher Training Course at the Northern California Center for the Alexander Technique (Redwood City, CA).

He is a student of internationally recognized Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician: Bobby Shew. Pete has also studied trumpet privately with: Raymond Mase, John Henes, Mark Inouye, Jeff Biancalana, Louis Hanzlik, Mike Vax, Greg Hopkins, Tony Lujan, Paul Fontaine, John Cappola, Warren Gale, Jeff Stout, Scott Fessler, Rick Winslow, John Pearson, and Steve Braet.

At Sonoma State University (since1999), Pete teaches Beginning Jazz Improvisation, Jazz History, Contemporary Jazz Ensembles, and Studio Trumpet. As an Adjunct Jazz Instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College (since 1996), he teaches Beginning Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Appreciation and Applied Music (Private Trumpet Instruction). As a Guest Lecturer at SSU and SRJC, Pete has taught classes in Jazz Composition, History of American Music, Brass Ensemble and Big-Band (SSU), as well as, Jazz Combos, Jazz-Pop Theory, Intermediate Improvisation and Big-Band (SRJC). Additionally, he has taught Jazz Appreciation at Napa Valley College and is currently also the Trumpet Instructor at Pacific Union College. He has been active in both Northern and Southern California as a Jazz, Brass, and Trumpet Clinician and Private Teacher for 26 years. Also, Pete is a member of the International Trumpet Guild and the International Association of Jazz Educators. He has authored 15 jazz trumpet solo transcription books and transcribed over 400 jazz tunes and arrangements. Pete's jazz trumpet solo transcriptions have included with both the 2006 and 2009 Concord Music Group re-releases of the Miles Davis (late 50's) Prestige recording sessions. Under the guidance of James Newton (Downbeat Poll Winner-Jazz Flute), Pete transcribed and arranged portions of Duke Ellington's "Queen's Suite". This work was performed by the Danish National Radio Orchestra in 1991.

In addition to appearing regularly in a variety of settings which include orchestral, opera, theater, dance and brass groups, Pete also plays with his own Jazz Quintet (the Blue Note Collective). He has appeared on 4 albums including Mel Graves and the Sonoma State University Faculty Jazz Ensemble's "Ear Shot". For the past 23 years, Pete has also been the Racetrack Bugler on the Northern California Fair Circuit, performing each summer at the Alameda, Humboldt, Sonoma, Solano, San Joaquin, and Sacramento State Fairs. He has also worked for Holland America, Princess and Carnival Cruise Lines as a featured soloist and lead player. Pete has performed with, and arranged for, Ensembles featuring such well-known jazz artists as Bobby Shew, Charlie Haden, James Newton, Red Calendar, Bruce Forman, Tom Scott, Carl Fontana, Joe Williams, Albert Heath, Ernie Watts, and Roscoe Mitchell.
