Wednesday, February 27
John Stowell

The incredible jazz guitarist John Stowell returns to SSU Jazz Forum, this time in a quartet featuring SSU Jazz Faculty Randy Vincent, Cliff Hugo and George Marsh. Stowell has regularly performed as a duo with bassist David Friesen for the last 30 years, and was featured in a groundbreaking tour of Russia with Paul Horn in 1983. Perhaps Larry Coryell put it best - "John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn’t use any of the clichés; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator." Fireworks are guaranteed!

Wednesday, March 6
Dayna Stephens & Jeff Denson

Rising star saxophonist Dayna Stephens makes his SSU jazz forum debut in a duo with bassist and friend of the program, Jeff Denson. Bay Area native Stephens' debut CD, "The Timeless Now," features legends John Scofield, Taylor Eigsti, Ben Street, Eric Harland, and Nick Vayenas, and has won much significant critical acclaim since its release in 2007. Jeff Denson gave us a taste of his new CD, "The Secret World," in a spectacular concert last semester at SSU. Don't miss this meeting of two of the most creative minds on the scene today!

Wednesday, April 10
Shawn Baltazor

NYC-based drummer/composer and Bay Area native Shawn Baltazor also makes his jazz forum debut this semester. His group will feature Kermit Driscoll, who regularly performs and records as a member of both Bill Frisell's and John Hollenbeck's groups. These guys truly represent the cutting edge of jazz in the new century!

Wednesday, May 1
Ted Shafer's Jelly Roll Jazz Band

Banjoist Ted Shafer formed this band in 1959 to emulate the sound of Joe Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. Five years later, he founded the Merry Makers Record Company, which has had over 30 releases to date. This is a great opportunity to catch some traditional jazz from a group that's been doing it for over 50 years!

Wednesdays remaining
Faculty and Students of the Jazz Program

Jazz Forums continue the remainder of the semester with SSU Jazz faculty coaching student groups.
