Adjudicator for this year's Choral Festival will be Puerto Rican-born conductor Angel Vázquez-Ramos, Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Bakersfield. Before completing his doctoral studies at Florida State University, Dr. Vázquez-Ramos taught secondary choral music in Pinellas County Schools in the Tampa Bay Area. He previously held positions in churches in both Largo and Tallahassee, Florida, and San Clemente, California. He has published articles on assessment in music education and teacher preparation in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing and the Florida Music Director.

Sonoma State Jazz Day

Now in its fifth year under the direction of Jazz Studies Program Director Doug Leibinger, Jazz Day is a festival for high school jazz bands. Groups perform in Weill Hall and receive master classes from the SSU Jazz studio faculty. Jazz Day is free and open to the public.

Timothy M. Smith will be the conductor of the Sonoma County Senior High Honor Band. He is a seasoned conductor and veteran music educator - an Emeritus Professor of Music, who, in fall of 2016 assumed the position of Artistic and Music Director of the Sacramento Symphonic Winds, and is in his tenth season as Music Director and Conductor of the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra. Retiring from academia in 2008, Smith's teaching career included founding the instrumental music program at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA and a twenty-two year tenure as Professor of Music at California State University, East Bay in Hayward.

Bobby Rogers will be the conductor of the Junior High Honor Band. He is a graduate of Sonoma State University (B.A. in Music Education and Jazz Performance) and Sacramento State University (M.A. in Wind Conducting). He was the Region 3 finalist for California Teacher of the Year in 2009, Claus Noble Educator of Distinction in 2010 and Program of Excellence for top program in Yolo County 2015. Mr. Rogers is currently conductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony's Repertory Orchestra. He is also the music director at Pioneer High School in Woodland and the Yolo Community Band.
