Archaeological Technician

Position

The Archaeological Technician participates in fieldwork and/or lab analyses and writes portions of technical reports. Under supervision, the Technician performs assigned standardized procedures associated with archaeological survey and excavation, including preparing laboratory specimens, materials, and equipment, and producing elements of standard reports. Technicians may conduct pre-field or post-field research; act as a team member on an archaeological survey, excavation, and/or laboratory team; coordinate with others in collecting and analyzing archaeological data; write portions of technical reports; prepare graphics; and format final documents.

Qualifications

:A bachelor’s degree in Archaeology/Anthropology or a related field and at least 400 hours experience on multiple sites and/or sites types and in field and lab settings. One year of field and lab experience may be substituted for the Bachelor of Arts. The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively under supervision and to apply standard methods and procedures associated with archaeological survey and excavation as a junior member of a team, to follow oral and written procedures, and to work cooperatively and effectively with others. Ability to label artifacts to curation standards and to accurately catalog most artifact types under study, to distinguish basic material types appropriate to the task including prehistoric materials and various types of lithic material (such as chert, obsidian, sandstone, etc.), shell, bone, and various types of historic material (such as ceramic, glass, metal, etc.), as well as fragments of artifacts. Ability to recognize archaeological sites in the field, to map sites and complete portions of archaeological site survey record forms to the appropriate standard. Ability to prepare short reports in Microsoft Word and Excel, ability to prepare site maps in graphics programs. Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies, to walk long distances, to engage in sustained physical labor, and to work at a keyboard for up to four hours a day required. Valid drivers license and good driving record are required.

Salary and Benefits

The full salary range is $12.24 to $18.36 an hour, depending upon experience. This is an hourly renewable position that will be used on a project-specific, on-call basis. Benefits include vacation, sick, and holiday time earned in relation to hours worked.
