Updating your Computer

All Windows computers connected to the network must be up to date on all Windows service packs and security patches.

Software Update Services, or SUS, is a feature designed by Microsoft that will automatically update your machine with the latest Critical Updates and Patches. The advantage of SUS as opposed to Windows Update is that SUS will check and install updates automatically and is not dependant on Microsoft. The University uses SUS in conjunction with Norton Antivirus to ensure that all machines running Windows in the dorms stay virus free.

What does it do?

SUS works in the background when your computer is on to check for any available updates. When updates become available it downloads and caches them until the next scheduled install time. They can also be installed manually by clicking on the globe icon next to the clock. If the updates are not installed manually then, at the scheduled install time, SUS will install them on your machine. SUS will ask you to confirm the install and you will have the ability to cancel it at that time. Once the install is completed you may be asked to confirm the restart if the update requires a restart. SUS will not do anything without asking you first.

How do I get it?

You can download an automatic update script that configures your machine to access our server. Like Norton AntiVirus, this program is available on the the ResNet website. The installer can only be downloaded when on campus, but the rest of the ResNet website can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet.

What will this do to my computer?

This script adds entries to your machine that tells it to check daily for updates, download and cache them automatically and install them at 6pm. If there are no updates then you will not be bothered. When you leave campus we have created another script that removes SUS entries from your machine.

Can I manually update my machine through Windows Update?

Windows Update will continue to function as normal. SUS is simply the automated version. You can still go to Windows Update and download any update you need.

It is acceptable to use Windows Update without SUS although we recommend that you set up the automated features in Windows Update. Remember it is a requirement that you maintain and protect your computer in order to continue your access to the Internet while living in on-campus housing.
