Q: How do I dial off campus?

A: Dial 9 + seven digit number.

Q: How do I dial long distance?

A: Dial 9 + calling card instructions.

Q: I can't dial 411!

A: 411 is restricted from SSU phones.

Q: How do I get an operator?

A: Pac Bell: dial 6 + 1 + 0, wait for Operator. AT&T: dial 6 + 1 + 0 + 0, wait for Operator.

Q: I dial and get a busy or fast busy and I know they aren't on the phone!

A: Especially during the first few weeks of school, campus is flooded with incoming and outgoing calls. Please be patient, hang up and try again in a few minutes.

Q: How do I dial to an on-campus number?

A: SSU uses 5-digit extensions. For faculty and staff phones, dial 4 + last four digits of phone number. For Residence Halls, dial 5 + last four digits of phone number.

Q: How do I transfer a call to another campus phone?

A: Follow these steps.

  1. Press the flash key (if your phone has one) or briefly depress and release the hook switch.
  2. After hearing the special dial tone, dial the number where you want to transfer the call.
  3. Listen for the ring. (You may let the new party answer and announce the transfer.)
  4. Hang up.
  5. If the party you are attempting to transfer to is unavailable, press the flash-hook again. You will be reconnected to the original party.

Q: How do I Conference Calls?

A: Follow these steps.

  1. Press the flash key (if your phone has one) or briefly depress and release the hook switch.
  2. After hearing the special dial tone, dial the second number.
  3. Listen for ring. (You may let the new party answer and announce the conference.)
  4. When you're ready to let the first party join the conversation, press the flash key or hook switch again.
  5. Repeat 1-4 for each for up to 3 callers, including yourself.

Q: How do I answer Call Waiting?

A: Easy!

  1. During a call in progress, you will hear two audible beeps.
  2. Press the flash key/hook switch to accept the incoming call.
  3. Press the flash key/hook switch again to toggle between calls.

Q: Can I get a campus voicemail account on my Residence Hall phone?

A: Sorry, no. You'll need to get an answering machine.
