Stevenson Hall
Six Tech Classrooms were remodelled in the summer of 2001. They all have the same equipment: A cabinet with a DVD/VCR, computer & monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse, Smart Panel for easy control, cable for laptop computer. A data projector to be used with DVD/VCR, computer or laptop. A SmartBoard which doubles as a whiteboard.
Instructions
All cabinets use the same key. Instructors will need to check out a cabinet
key from Customer Service (department approval is necessary). The key
can be difficult to insert into the lock, it takes a bit of patience.
After unlocking the cabinet, the pocket doors may be pushed in - keep
handles out.
Begin by turning on the SmartPanel Control System. Press Projector ON.
Wait for the red warm-up light to turn green. It is OK if the light is
flashing.

Check volume levels in the lighted volume selector.
- It is recommended you turn it all the way down until your source is running, as different sources have widely varying default volumes.
If you are using your own laptop:
- The cable for attaching a guest laptop will be found in the cabinet.
- Attach the short end to the wall. Attach the other end to the laptops VGA port and sound out port (a.k.a. speakers, headphone jack) if sound is desired.
Turn on power to your source the G4, your laptop, and/or the DVD/VCR.
Touch the source for the projector to display. The Active source will
light up in blue.
When using the resident G4, a Macintosh with Windows 2000 available via VirtualPC, a wireless remote with laser pointer and wireless keyboard are available (in the cabinet). These may be used from any location in the classroom and do not need to be pointed in any particular direction.
- The keyboard has a trackpad (mouse) and buttons built into it.
- When using the keyboard with MacOS, the Windows key is the Command (Apple) key, and Alt is the same as Option. Cntl-clicking will give you contextual menus.
- A guest laptop will not be able to use the wireless devices, except for the laser pointer. The laser pointer can be used with any display.
To use the resident computer (G4):
- The computer is set up the same as the University computer labs. You
can login using our generic student account.
- Login Name: student
- no password (do not put anything in this field)
- When launching Windows 2000 (under the Apple menu), the same login name and lack of password is used.
To use the Video Display (VHS or DVD):
- The units should be thought of as individual players. One unit must be stopped before the other is asked to play. (e.g., When the VCR is playing, press stop, select DVD source button, then press play on the DVD unit.) Your media may be left in the drives when switching back and forth. There will always be a ten second delay before another input selection takes effect.
- Insert the media and press play on the respective unit.
A SmartBoard has been provided for use with the G4. It will allow annotation via Floating Tools, and recording of white board use via the Notebook, as well as allow entering characters in a spreadsheet via the virtual Keyboard.
- The Users Manual is located in the cabinet for use in the classroom (please do not remove it from the classroom) and for checkout from Media Services.
- Be aware that the SmartBoard takes some practice. Training can be scheduled by contacting Alisandra Brewer (see below).
- The SmartBoard can also be used as just a whiteboard. You will need to provide your own Dry Erase pens. Use only the provided styluses or true Dry Erase pens! Anything else will permanently damage the board.
- If the Board ceases to respond (the light on the board itself is red, not green), double-click the start SmartBoard icon on the desktop.
At the end of your class, push the off button on the SmartPanel and the projector will cool down and shut off. You will not be able to restart the projector until it has gone through the cool-off period.
Put all devices back in the cabinet and lock it. You are responsible for these items (if you used them):
- The SmartBoards four pens and eraser and Users Manual.
- The laptop cable
- The screen pull-down rod
- The wireless remote and keyboard
- The DVD/VCR deck remote
Make sure you have removed your media from all drives (DVD & VHS, Zip & CD on the computer)! If you find another persons media, please leave it in the cabinet on the VCR.
If you have any problems or questions, or need any special software installed, please contact Media Services at media.services@sonoma.edu or 664-2117, or Alisandra Brewer at brewer@sonoma.edu or 664-4241.
