Applying to ENSP

Admission Requirements

There are three ways of applying to the Environmental Studies and Planning (ENSP) major: 1) a student may declare a major in ENSP when applying to Sonoma State University as a Freshman; 2) a transfer student with 60 units or more may declare a major in ENSP if the academic requirements below are met; and 3) once enrolled at SSU, a student may apply to change their major to ENSP if they meet the academic requirements and complete the application process outlined below.  Please note that even undeclared students must apply to the Department.  All students considering this major should make an appointment to see a faculty member for academic advising prior to starting the program.

Academic Requirements:

  1. Minimum Grade Point Average:  2.5

    Note: a lower average GPA may be considered in special circumstances:  Please attach an explanation.)
  2. Completion of English 101 (or equivalent); provide proof of completion.        

Application Requirements:

  1. Meet with a faculty member for advising on a study plan.
  2. Write an essay of no more than 500 words, typed and double spaced.  Explain how you became interested in the environment, your career goals, and why you feel ENSP is the right major for you. 
  3. Attach a copy of your college-level transcripts and include an unofficial transcript from SSU.  Official transcripts are not necessary.
  4. Complete Application to declare a major in Environmental Studies and Planning.
  5. Complete Change of Major form. (Obtain in ENSP Office in RCH 18)

Applications to the ENSP Department are accepted throughout the semester.  You will generally receive an answer within one week.  Feel free to inquire about your application status at any time.  An email regarding the decision will be mailed to you at the address you indicate on your application.
