SSU Engineering Industry Advisory Board
The main role of the IAB is to build a conduit between the engineering department and the community and local high-tech industry that would provide opportunities for curriculum improvement, student internship and employment, research collaborations and service to the community.
President Ruben Armiñana
Sonoma State University Engineering Science Department's Industry Advisory Board (IAB) consists of 15 members representing San Francisco North Bay's region high technology industries, Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), and Sonoma State University. SSU IAB's mission is to support engineering education and workforce development in the North Bay region. IAB has focused its efforts on three tasks: Public Outreach, Student Recruitment, and ABET Accreditation.
- The Public Outreach group is tasked with strengthening the connection between the community and the engineering department through internship opportunities in local companies for the electrical engineering students; faculty and industry research collaborations, and providing opportunities for the local industries to benefit from undergraduate and graduate engineering programs for their employees.
- The Student Recruitment taskforce's goal is to increase the engineering enrollment at SSU and to improve the quality of the incoming students. The taskforce has identified the department's hands-on approach in the electrical engineering curriculum as an important recruitment tool. Another important factor noted by the taskforce is the ability of SSU's engineering graduates to start effective and productive work upon employment. Support of the high tech industries in the North Bay and Sonoma County has been quite a significant recruitment tool among prospective students.
- The IAB accreditation group is tasked with devising strategies for a successful accreditation process for SSU's electrical engineering program. The taskforce indicates that the program is prepared to start the accreditation process.
Engineering at Sonoma State is all about preparing highly-qualified graduates to help propel our region's technology industry forward. Our Industry Advisory Board is key to informing and supporting our efforts so that what we do on campus has the greatest impact.
