About the NEXUS Institute at SSU

Purpose:

  • To assist elementary teachers in developing a Common Core English language arts/science project-based curriculum for their classroom
  • To have teachers leave with understandings of an effective science/Common Core English language arts curriculum to be used immediately in their classroom
  • To give participating teachers the opportunity to develop a learning community of their peers
  • To give participating teachers the opportunity to challenge themselves to incorporate more science project-based learnings into their curriculum
  • To learn to embrace science into their classroom learning environment
  • To have participating teachers reflect on their lessons and student learning and, thus, enhance student learning

Outcomes:

  • Participating teachers will share/publish their newly-developed science and Common Core English language arts project-based curriculum with each other and with School of Education
  • Participating teachers will develop measurable data for their students’ learning (pre/post)
  • Participating teachers will be willing to have peers and/or faculty observe their lessons for reflections and growth as professionals
  • Participating teachers will take a pre/post survey for SMTRI data

Logistics:

  • One week workshop (Monday-Friday) offered from 9-3:30 on SSU campus.
  • Two units available for participants
  • Two additional Saturday meetings: one in the fall and one in the spring
  • Participants will receive instructional materials for use in their planning and/or classroom

Requirements for Participating Teachers:

  • Have a Single Subject or Multiple Subject Credential
  • Meet all the five days in the summer and the two for the following school year
  • Willing to share their lessons with each other
  • Reflect on their student learning and willing to alter the lessons for better learning outcomes
  • Participate in measurable outcomes of student learning to meet the requirements of SMTRI
  • Willing to observe peers or be observed by peers and/or faculty
  • Share/publish their newly-developed science and Common Core English language arts project-based curriculum with each other and with School of Education
