Charles "Chip" McAuley

Charles "Chip" McAuley is an instructor in the Communication Studies
department and adviser to the STAR, Sonoma State University's
award-winning student newspaper. McAuley is a freelance journalist who has
been published in numerous periodicals with approximately 1,000 articles
written and published to date. Currently, he is a Board Member of the
Sonoma State Student Union Corporation where he serves as Faculty
Representative. He also has served as a Board Member of the California
College Media Association.

In addition to his work in journalism, McAuley's background includes time
spent as a Special Consultant Science Writer/Producer for NASA Education
and Public Outreach (Astrophysics Division) housed at SSU where he worked
on educating the public about the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope
(now the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope), an ambitious project which aims
to discover the truth behind the mysteries of Dark Matter and possibly
discover new laws of physics. During his time with NASA E/PO he was
instrumental in the development of Epo's Chronicles, an educational web
comic still in production. He has also worked on projects for Lucasfilm,
Universal Studios Orlando, Emeril and Good Morning America as well as on
the feature film "The Animal". McAuley has produced, directed, written,
edited and appeared in dozens of independent video projects.

At SSU, McAuley has taught COMS 402: Senior Seminar (Creativity, The Human
Condition and Communication), COMS 301: Mass Communication Theory and
Research, COMS 368: News Writing and Editing, COMS 210: Writing For The
Media, COMS 318: Advanced Media Writing, has guest lectured in COMS 315:
Media Law and has also created and taught several COMS 320: Selected
Topics courses including: Cyberspace, Communication & The Digital Age,
Science Fiction Cinema & American Culture, Propaganda & The Media, Star
Trek & American Society as well as Sex & Cinema.

McAuley writes poetry, screenplays and is also a playwright. He holds a
B.A. in Communication Studies with honors and distinction and an M.A. in
English. Currently, he is pursuing his doctorate in Transformative Studies
with the California Institute of Integral Studies where he is focusing on
Communication and Integral Education.

He believes that students should follow their passions and that each
student is capable of achieving excellence. McAuley is happy to mentor
creative artists of any type.
