Melinda BarnardMELINDA BARNARD
SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY
Communication Studies Department

Melinda Barnard is known for her energetic classes and her commitment to students. She conveys the fundamental ideas and facts and then encourages her students to develop their own interpretations. Melinda feels that good teaching is reflected in the diversity of opinions students express in a classroom.

Melinda has taught at St. Mary's College in Santa Clara, Stanford, and University of Hartford in Connecticut. She has ventured out of the ivory tower to work as a television producer in Miami, Florida and Newark, New Jersey, and as a market researcher for a Connecticut ad agency.

Her academic research is in the effects of the media on children. She has been conducting research for over fifteen years, including early work on Sesame Street and Big Blue Marble, a three-year Markle foundation project on TV and reading, and most recently, work on how we view television families. With a B.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, and a Master's from Harvard, Melinda feels her strong academic background has been valuable not only for what it has taught, but in helping her understand what was left out.

In her other life, Melinda is the wife of stone sculptor TBarny, whose works are seen in galleries across the country. She often travels with her husband and loves to act as Public Relations Manager for his work. Melinda and her husband live in the Alexander Valley wine country.
