Detroit: Become Human represent another installment in pop culture’s obsession with androids. In this game, crafted by developer Quantic Dream, gamers are introduced to a futuristic Detroit revitalized by the introduction of androids that exist only to serve mankind. We play as three different android characters and our decision determine what Detroit’s future will be.
Interestingly, in a game that relies heavily on tropes of enslavement to spin it’s narrative, topics of race and racialization rarely arise, if ever. For this installment of the Gaming Race series, , we’ll discuss why it’s important to discuss American enslavement, why and how race still matters when pop culture turns to stories involving androids, and how Quantic Dream’s design of games like Detroit and Heavy Rain, don’t give us as much freedom to determine story outcomes as we think.
