Provost’s Office

Highlights

  • Reaccreditation of SSU: Next Educational Effectiveness Visit in 2019
  • Diversity: SSU Diversity Plan and Hiring of Director for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence, Dr. Elisa Velasquez-Andrade
  • Degree Progress Reports: Created a system of reporting course substitutions and are now implementing with departments. Majors, concentration and GE requirements are built into the system.
  • Graduation Initiative: Creation of Core Implementation Group and successful implementation of block scheduling for first time freshmen for Fall 2010 (pilot: remediation and Pre-Business).
  • Part Time Faculty Contract Process: For the first time more than 80% of contracts were received in the first week of August.
  • Office of Research and Sponsored Programs: Increased the number of proposals submitted by 20%

Academic Programs

  • Hired first Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. John Kornfeld
  • WASC Substantive Change Interim Approval of new BA in Liberal Studies, Solano County
  • $25,000 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) grant through the CSU Chancellor’s Office for Center for Community Engagement
  • Academic Resources:
  • Enrollment Management – improved the process by using student groups, FTF seat distribution to schools & business process for schools
  • FIRMS Program Codes – evaluated and adjusted FIRMS program codes
  • Budget – implemented system for efficient department/fund level budget and reconciliation

Faculty Affairs

  • Revision of Tenure Track Hiring Search Procedure Manual: New procedures address some concerns from both the ad-hoc diversity and President’s Diversity Council
  • Training presentations to department chairs on temporary appointments, entitlements, careful consideration
  • Reviewed and streamlined procedures and forms for faculty resignations, retirements, chair appointments and Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP)

Institutional Research

  • Conducted internal surveys including campus climate, alumni
  • External data reporting including VSA, College Portrait
  • Academic Planning Database improvements; developed training program for dept chairs, and cleaned up the APDB categories

Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

  • Updated pre-award forms, procedures and guidelines and provided all PEF signers with a refresher training to enhance efficiency and better facilitate submission of proposals
  • Staged two university-wide events to formally recognize research and sponsored programs on campus (Provost’s Recognition Event and Faculty Exposition Event)
  • In collaboration with the FSSP, offered five internal competitions to support faulty and student research and scholarship, awarding 23 internal grants and/or recognition awards to faculty and students

  • Leny Mendoza Strobel hosted the First International Babaylan Conference at SSU on April 17-18, 2010. At the conference the book, Babaylan: Filipinos and the Call of the Indigenous, edited by Leny Mendoza Strobel, was launched

  • Brantley Bryant: (Book published in 2010) Geoffrey Chaucer Hath a Blog / Medieval Studies and new Media. Palgrave, MacMillan, Publishers
  • Anne Goldman: Published an essay on Dante and Primo Levi in the spring issue of the GEORGIA REVIEW and have an essay, "Wild Thing," forthcoming in a new literary journal (THE PEDESTRIAN)

School of Business and Economics

Highlights:

  • Completed a five‐year comprehensive strategic plan, incorporating the input of a broad set of stakeholders. Implemented the plan by identifying action items and their staging across the next few years and acted upon those identified for 2009‐2010. Management Operating System (MOS): Developed a management operating system to support and implement fulfillment of SBE’s mission as indicated in the strategic plan.
  • Completed a branding initiative and a website overhaul to position the School competitively to attract students and engage the community.
  • Launched the Executive MBA program in partnership with School of Extended Education; 19 students from major regional employers (Medtronic, BioMarin, Agilent, Sonoma County, Kendall Jackson), small business, and not‐for‐profits ($665,000 new gross revenue, strong diversity in cohort, broad reach into key North Bay Businesses).
  • Accelerated SBE Career Center activities to better support students, including mentoring program, internships, and more job placements.
  • Launched student and alumni engagement initiatives including partnering with ASI to host the Jessica Jackley event, launching a Financial Literacy Headquarters, conducting an alumni speaker series, and providing more support to student organizations.
  • Professional Programs: Tasting Room Management Certificate Program; Hospitality Management Program with River Rock Casino; Human Resource Management Certificate Program.
  • Financial Literacy Headquarters: Worked with alumni and students to conduct programs for the community on financial planning, tax advice, and mortgage counseling.
  • Assurance of Learning: “Closed the loop” for AoL in four program learning objectives: Global Perspectives, Ethical Reasoning, Oral Communications, and Quantitative Applications.
  • Career Center: Created and conducted career center programs focused on students’ career development including the mentor program, the Career EXPO, the Internship program, and a series of workshops to deliver specific career skills. Increased full-time employment and internship opportunities.
  • Support Research, Professional Development Support: Prioritized funding of research through professional development grants and awards for publications: Granted 20 awards across 13 faculty, most of the multiple awards went to junior faculty; 19 separate publications across 13 faculty, two of the publications were co‐authored internally. Promote Research Publicized faculty research to stakeholders through our annual report and other media.
  • Economic Outlook Conference: Hosted the annual North Bay Economic Outlook conference; 200+ attendees heard SBE’s “State of the Economy” analyses and call for regional economic collaboration; A special issue of the North Bay Business Journal was devoted to the conference.
  • Comprehensive Campaign Foundation: Focused on engaging business professionals in SBE and working with the Development Office to identify prospects.
  • Economic Development: Laid the groundwork for the Economic Development and Innovation Accelerator to create momentum for, and increase the velocity of, a variety of economic development initiatives focused on job creation and business growth.

School of Education

  • Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education adjunct faculty member Nancy Case-Rico is involved with four federal for Teaching American History grants—a million dollars each grant.
  • Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education Assistant Professor Jessica K. Parker has published a new book: Teaching Tech Savvy Kids: Bringing Digital Media Into the Classroom (Corwin). The book offers educators new ways of understanding young people's online lives and how the resources of new media and participatory culture can be effectively integrated into their pedagogical practices.
  • Adjunct faculty member Elizabeth Galvez-Hard of the LEEE Department had the opportunity to teach in at the University of Madrid in Spain, putting SSU on the map for many people from Spain as well as students and professors from the East Coast who attended.
  • LEEE associate professor Kathy Morris just completed 1.5 years on the Teaching Mathematics Advisory Panel for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. She served on a diverse 22-member panel which drafted recommendations for revisions to CTC standards.
  • Curriculum Studies and Secondary Education associate professor Karen Grady gave presentations of three different research projects at the leading national literacy research conference. Dr. Grady completed the final evaluation of the Redwood Area Academic Literacy Initiative and presentation to funding agency for $970,000 federal grant that has been improving academic literacy in science, mathematics and history among high school students in northern California over the past four years. She also completed two manuscripts that have been submitted for review.
  • ELSE associate professor Emiliano Ayala, Principle Investigator on the ENACT Grant - Recognizing the value of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a model pedagogical framework, EnACT~PTD offered more than 55 faculty from across the CSU the skills, support, and training necessary to successfully incorporate UDL principles into their coursework.
  • CSSE associate professor Carlos Ayala and Mathematics and Statistics professor Ben Ford, received an NSF Noyce grant of $900K to support future science and mathematics teachers with scholarships, funding for travel. and internships.

School of Extended Education

Highlights:

  • Thirteen students graduated from the Napa Degree Completion program
  • M.A. In Spanish program graduated its first class
  • Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) expands to its third site at Sonoma Vintage House
  • OLLI fundraising efforts total $87,750
  • Began internal marketing strategy as outreach to the campus
  • 1,213 students enrolled in January Intersession and attended one or more of the 73 courses offered (40 GE classes)
  • More than 120 courses were offered during the 2010 Summer Session and more than 1,500 students enrolled in summer 2010 courses
  • Associated General Contractors and the Redwood Empire Construction Specification Institute collaborated with the School of Extended Education to offer scholarships for Construction Management and the Green Building Certificate Program, with more than $10,000 now available for students.

  • Sonoma cohort graduated 20 social work students in Long Beach program
  • Executive MBA launched its first cohort Spring 2010
  • The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education selected the SSU School of Education in collaboration with the School of Extended Education as the only campus in the United States permitted to offer programs for primary level school science teachers for Sustainable Certificate Program approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners to offer continuing education professional credit
  • In collaboration with Solano County Community College, signed an MOU to move plans forward to offer a B.A. Liberal Studies program to Solano County students

Biology

  • Seven grants awarded to Biology faculty totaling $5.35 M including:
    • Dan Crocker was awarded a $500,000 grant from the National Institute of Health to study mechanisms of oxidative stress in elephant seals
    • Karina Nielsen was awarded $288,677 to lead the "Sandy Beaches and Surf Zone Ecosystems" study as part of a $4 million grant to the North Central Coast Marine Protected Areas Baseline Program
    • Michael Cohen received the Theodore Roosevelt Environmental Award from the Association of California Water Agencies.

Computer Science

  • Two applications written by computer science students were accepted into the Apple App store (iRovio – iPhone/iPad controls for Rovio mobile webcam and Forsaken – fantasy arcade adventure)
  • Dr. Suzanne received $16,800 in student stipend and travel funding for "Modeling the Power Consumption of Computer Systems with Graphics Processing Units (GPUs)" from the Computing Research Association. She also has published 4 papers

Engineering Science

  • New Bioengineering track in Masters in Computer and Engineering Science (MSCES) program as a third concentration
  • Approval of Electrical Engineering minor in BS program
  • Faculty held a retreat and identified the mission and vision of the Engineering Science department
  • First BS graduates from the ES department

Mathematics

  • Graduate 20 students, including the first 4 students to receive degrees in Statistics from SSU
  • Had successful Fall and Spring Colloquium series (12 talks in the fall, 12 talks in the spring; the 24 speakers represented 12 distinct institutions)
  • Held a successful Math Festival on April 28, 2010, with keynote speaker John Martin from SRJC, followed by an alumni and awards dinner
  • Two SSU teams competed in the internationally recognized Mathematical Modeling Competition the weekend of February 18, 2010
  • Six SSU math majors competed in the Putnam Mathematical Competition (a national competition held for the past 72 years) on December 5, 2009

Nursing

  • Successfully completed mandatory program continuing approval process with the California State Board of Registered Nursing for the Prelicensure Undergraduate Nursing Program, the Direct Entry MSN Program and the MSN- Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Full approval granted for maximum 8 years with no areas of non-compliance to state regulatory requirements (Jan 2010).
  • First-time pass rate for national RN licensing examination for 20 DEMSN graduates was 100% and for 32 prelicensure BSN graduates was 97% (continue to exceed the national and state averages of 85-86%).
  • Voluntary national specialty credentialing rates for MSN Family Nurse Practitioner graduates and DEMSN Clinical Nurse Leader graduates continue to exceed 90%.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner Rural Distance Program with CSU Stanislaus and Chico continues to receive Federal funding ($149,000) and Song-Brown funding ($235,000) – a total of 114 nurses are currently enrolled in this graduate program.
  • Collaborative Nursing Education Continuum Model (CNECM) with the five SSU service area Community College Nursing Programs, five area medical centers and two regional human simulation centers has successfully piloted the specially designed streamlined academic path for community college nursing students to begin BSN and MSN coursework while enrolled in their prelicensure nursing programs. ($400,000 funding for 3 years).
  • Liz Close appointed Special Consultant and Coordinator, CSU Nursing Education Pathways Project

Physics and Astronomy

  • The Cycromagnetic 17 tesla superconducting magnet came online and is currently being used by students for research and coursework with Professor Qualls. This instrument is extremely rare among undergraduate institutes around the world and signifies high-end infrastructure capable of projects and intensive research normally reserved for graduate institutions or national labs.
  • Professor Severson and collaborators were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for more than $630,000 to develop an astronomical adaptive optics system. The system to be installed at Pomona College's Table Mountain Observatory will be built with substantial student involvement. SSU students will work with Professor Severson during the four-year duration of the grant in his Darwin Hall Laboratory and at the telescope site in Southern California.
  • Professor Shi's laboratory experiments have yielded honeycomb-like regular arrays of nanometer (nm) sized pores in aluminum substrate. Facilities in the Keck Lab show that these pores are less than 100 nm in diameter and can be tuned by manipulating the fabrication parameters. This work has huge potential in applications such as data storage as different materials can be filled in these pores to demonstrate quantum-size effect.
  • Professor Qualls and students synthesized a number of organic superconductors and ferromagnetic colloidal suspensions in Darwin 303. The synthesis required very inert working atmosphere and growth conditions, which were provided by a Vacuum Atmosphere glove box and vibration isolated optical table. Samples are being shipped to numerous researchers around the world, promoting SSU's visibility as a leader in material science.
  • Professor Severson and coauthors submitted five articles for conference proceedings entitled "Learning from Inquiry in Practice.” The conference, held in January, honored the achievements of the education program of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Adaptive Optics on its ten-year anniversary.
  • Professor Qualls and coauthors published two articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals on spin density waves in low dimensional superconductors. This basic research is seeking to understand the fundamental mechanisms as to why organic materials can be superconducting.
  • Professor Severson assumed the mantle of directing and organizing the long-running "What Physicists Do" lecture series after the retirement of Professor Joe Tenn. Highlights of the 2009-2010 academic year, included Professor Raymond Jeanloz, UC Berkeley, discussing his role as Chair of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on International Security and Arms Control and Dr. Paul Kalas, UC Berkeley, presenting on his groundbreaking first images of an extrasolar planet orbiting a normal star.

NASA E/PO group and Professor Lynn Cominsky:

  • Professor Cominsky was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society, through the Forum on Education. The citation reads “For her seminal work to promote student and teacher education using NASA missions as inspiration.” Cominsky was also elected Vice Chair of the APS California section, and a Member-at-Large of the Executive Committee for the APS’ Division of Astrophysics
  • Received new funding totaling $499,596 from NASA to develop an on-line curriculum in Cosmology for college students. This three-year program is a partnership with Chicago State University and University of Nevada, Las Vegas, under the direction of Principal Investigator Lynn Cominsky
  • Professor Cominsky, Dr. Kevin McLin and 10 of the NASA Astrophysics Educator Ambassadors attend the First Fermi Science Symposium in Washington DC, in November 2009. Part of the trip included the premiere of the Cosmic Reflection Symphony at the Kennedy Center, and a ceremony which honored the teachers and Professor Cominsky’s work on behalf of Fermi
  • Professor Cominsky (along with at least 150 other people) was a co-author on about 30 peer-reviewed papers resulting from the first year of science data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

School of Social Sciences

  • Dr. Steve Estes, History, was awarded a Fulbright Senior Lecturing Fellowship in Germany from April to July 2010. He taught two classes on American history at the University of Erfurt. Erfurt is in the state of Thuringia, a state that was in East Germany before reunification two decades ago. On the Fulbright, Dr. Estes taught an undergrad class on the History of the American South and a class for MA students on the American Civil Rights Movement.
  • Dr. Dave McCuan, Political Science, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic during the 2009-2010 academic year. His responsibilities included courses on Terrorism and International Law, US Foreign Policy Since World War Two as well as Elections and Electoral Behavior.   • For academic year 2009-10, Dr. Amy Kittelstrom, History, was a fellow in Christian Thought and Practice at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University. The year was devoted entirely to completing her first book, The Religion Of Democracy: Liberals And Self-Culture In Evolutionary America, 1838-1912.
  • Dr. Heather Smith, Psychology, completed two grants. The first was a collaborative grant with faculty from Channel Islands and San Diego State University on the Social Psychology of Intergroup Relations and the other was a meta analysis of what relative deprivation predicts funded by the National Science Foundation.
  • Dr. Kathy Charmaz, Sociology, has one book, seven articles and an encyclopedia article in various stages of publication. Her specialties, Qualitative Research Methods, Grounded Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory, has made her an internationally renowned scholar who gave invited talks in Australia, University of South Denmark and University of Pisa in Italy, all in 2010.

University Library

Collaborative instruction

  • Librarians taught many components on research and information literacy skills across all disciplines — 71 sessions/classes total reaching 1,965 students.
  • Collaborated with Center for Teaching and Professional Development and IT in creating and presenting Teaching and Technology Series — 17 workshops with 36 attendees
  • Collaborated in planning and hosting several Moodle programs for the campus

  • Collaboration on the North Bay Historic Preservation Digital Collection included input from faculty and faculty emeritus, community members, and library staff. Grants

North Bay Historic Preservation Digital Collection (LHDRP grant, July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010, (http://northbaydigital.sonoma.edu/).

  • Launched with 200 of approximately 800 digitized images from our Sonoma County Preservation Project.
  • The project was funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
  • Collaboration on this project included input from faculty and faculty emeritus, community members, and library staff.

New or expanded library services and pilot projects

  • Created a Student Presentation Room for students to utilize in practicing presentations and to use for thesis defense
  • Expanded 24-hour study hall during finals to include the week before finals
  • Investigated digital and streaming video options and began a pilot program
  • Full library web site redesign, ADA compliant, to incorporate user-friendly navigation and web 2.0 tools. The new website provides a focus on library events and resources beyond the catalog that add value for the library researcher
