Want to be a COMS Major?

THE COMS MAJOR IS CLOSED

If you missed the deadline to apply as a new COMS major for Fall, 2013, you will have to wait until the next open period.  Please fill out a “Notification to Receive an Application” form (in the wall files next to the bulletin board) and turn it into the COMS department office.

Our Application process is generally in early March and early October of each year.  We can’t guarantee that we will have an application process every semester.

COMS is an impacted major.  We are sorry we cannot accommodate you at this time.  We will keep your form on file until we can open the major again.

Download request form here.

Coms cannot guarantee graduation of students in a timely manner. Over-enrollment in the major would also negatively impact our current students who already have to compete for classes to graduate.

Students who meet our requirements are more likely to enter the major in the next application period, although the GPA requirement has been raised from 3.0 to 3.5.  If room allows, students with a 3.25 will be considered.  With perseverance, students may eventually be accepted into the major.  The next time Coms will be open to change of majors is Fall, 2013 contingent upon budget considerations. Students should try to take COMS 200, 202, a beginning skill or an elective at a JC or over the summer at SSU.  COM 301 or 302 is sometimes offered in the summer to non-majors.

Look for updates on when to apply again (generally October and February) and contact Brooke Tester for application deadlines.

COMS evaluates applications on the following critereia:
--Student has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (2 points)
--Student will be a first-semester Sophomore the semester of application (2 points)
--Student will be a first-semester Junior the semester of application (1 point)
--Student has taken lower-division core classes (200 & 202) elsewhere (1 point each)
--Student has taken COMS elective or skill classes at SSU (1 point)
--Student has prior experience in the media area they wish to study (1 point)
Students with 4 or more points will be given priority. Students with 3 points will be admitted as space allows.
